Nursery (if applicable)

Our Nursery Class (Troll Class) is based in our Foundation Stage Unit, where we have a beautiful classroom, and an exciting garden to learn in. We help your children learn in a calm, friendly, engaging and creative way, with lots and lots of play. We aim to develop your child's learning, skills and independence, so that they develop a love of learning and school, building on the knowledge and experiences they already have.

Nursery is lead by Mrs Cullen, and supported by Mrs Nawaz.

Nursery Hours

At St Stephen's CofE First School our Nursery operates from 8:40 to 11:55 every weekday. Your child is eligible for 15 hours free nursery provision from the term after they turn 3.

Due to our start and finish times, morning nursery offers 16 1/4 hours a week. There is no charge for attendance.

We work very closely with Holly Trees Day Nursery (based at the children's centre on the school site), who may be able to offer an additional 15 hours funding if you are eligible for 30 hours, or if you need wrap-around care.

Please contact the school office on 01527 63911 to talk to us about a Nursery place.

Our Learning

Our curriculum is led by the children and their individual needs and interests. Each half term we have an overarching theme to ensure progression through our Early Years curriculum, that builds on prior knowledge and gives us opportunities to practice, develop and embed skills.

St Stephens C of E Foundation Stage Long Term Plan

Communication and Language is a prime area of our curriculum. To help ensure all children achieve their potential we use WellComm (a language assessment program) to assess and build children's language skills, and our staff have received training from Hanen to provide children with the right support for their age and developmental stage.

The gross and fine motor skills developed in Nursery support children's handwriting as they move through the school. We use the Kinetic Letters scheme which has been created with Nursery development in mind.

We provide daily phonics sessions and experiences throughout the day. We listen to and make different sounds; sing songs to develop awareness of rhythm and rhyme and play some simple games. The phonics skills developed in Nursery truly are the foundation of reading as children move through the school, where they use Read, Write Inc. Some aspects of RWI are introduced towards the end of the Nursery year to support children as they move into Reception.

Helping Your Child at Home

There are lots of ways that you can help your child learn at home.

PLAY IS THE WAY!

Young children learn best through play, so when helping your child to learn make it fun, and follow their lead.

There are lots of websites, organisations and apps that you and your child may find useful.

We also use Seesaw and Tapestry for us to share activities and learning with you at school. It can also be used for you to share your child's learning at home with us at school. We would love to see some of the adventures and activities they get up to! Log in details will be sent out to you as your child starts.
